The iconic Rolex Explorer was upgraded in 2016 without changing the reference, infilling the 3, 6, and 9 markers (which are the only arabic numerals on this rather simplistic dial). Rolex occasionally changes watches without changing the references, so this is the newer and more desirable “Mark II” dial — featuring the aforementioned luminous numerals and a longer handset for ease of use.
 
Simplicity is at the core of this quintessential tool watch. Hours, minutes, and seconds sweep across a deep black dial… and that’s about it. It’s unassuming and elegant. It works with almost all clothing, and has a spot in most all collections. At 39mm, it’s a bit more sleek and subtle than its larger Rolex sport model cousins.
 
This watch is guaranteed 100% authentic. This particular example is very much “pre-loved”, with shallow scratches and fleabites in the case. A suitable “beater” that retains its original finish, we have chosen not to polish this timepiece. The crystal is absolutely perfect, with no chips, scratches, or pock marks. The crown action is smooth and the watch runs within COSC specs. No surface on the watch remains perfectly unblemished. There are a few marks on the back of the case insinuating someone slipped when trying to open the caseback with a wrench. The clasp has some wear and swirls. All imperfections are visible in the photos.
