The Speedmaster Professional needs no introduction, but we'll give you a brief one:
A staple in nearly every collection, and a celebrated piece of global history, the Speedmaster is a wristed reminder of humanity’s expeditions into the cosmos. The Speedmaster was the first watch on the moon, yes. It was also the watch that Jack Swigert used to time a 14-second fuel burn to bring the Apollo 13 crew safely back to Earth after an oxygen tank exploded, plunging the crew into peril.
“We used the OMEGA watch that Jack had on his wrist and I had to control the spacecraft. Jack timed the burn on the engine to make that correction to get us back home safely.” — Mission Commander James Lovell
This particular Omega Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” features a sapphire crystal over the dial (instead of the usual Hesalite), as well as a sapphire crystal on the caseback, exposing the watch’s internals.
